Job Description The Schwartz laboratory ( seeks a motivated, experienced, and highly creative student Web developer to create and maintain interactive Web-based interfaces for a suite of bioinformatics algorithms, tools, and databases developed in the laboratory and used extensively by researchers worldwide (currently over 30,000 visits from researchers in 110 countries). Additionally, the student is expected to assist with the general computational programming needs of the lab and to interface with system administrators and various research personnel. The job will be part-time during the school year (10-20 hours/week) and full-time (30-40 hours/week) during the summer and winter intersession. The job allows for substantial scheduling flexibility. This is an excellent opportunity for any qualified student wishing to gain significant experience in the ever-growing field of computational biology. Job Requirements REQUIRED SKILLS: * Proficiency in at least two of the following: Python, PHP, Ruby, Java, Perl, C/C++ (code samples will be expected) * General understanding of web software and web based applications * Ability to learn new programming languages/frameworks on the job * Comfortable working in a command-line based UNIX/Linux environment IDEAL CANDIDATE: * Strives to write code that is readable, maintainable, and well documented * Previous experience in web development including: * Experience building web pages with HTML/CSS * JavaScript experience and experience using at least one JS framework (jQuery, MooTools, AngularJS, etc.) * Experience developing/maintaining AJAX based web applications * Experience with modern software development best practices (source control, bug trackers, etc.) * Experience with any MVC based framework (CodeIgniter, CakePHP, web2py, Django, etc.) * If no direct experience, candidate is strongly encouraged to have at least an understanding of MVC architecture * Experience writing SQL and knowledge of proper database design principles * An eye for aesthetics and creative visualizations as evidenced by previous Web designs (sample work will be expected).
Hourly Rate $14.00/hour to $21.00/hour, commensurate with experience
