Work-Study Research Assistant Program

General Research Focus: The focus of this research is to understand the amount of tax that multinational firms pay, or would pay if they did not operate globally.

Brief Position Description: This position involves collecting income tax data of publicly traded firms in order to determine how much tax these firms owe on their foreign earnings. This information is available from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the position will involve learning how to use their website and read financial statements of publicly traded firms.

In addition to general research and data collection skills, this position will provide an opportunity to understand the corporate tax system and how publicly traded firms report financial information to regulators and investors. The position will involve learning how to use the SEC website and read financial statements of publicly traded firms.

Job Description: A "Student Research Review Assistant - 205" will assist faculty in research efforts by conducting review of literature and subject material specific to research topics. This position involves collecting income tax data of publicly traded firms in order to determine how much tax these firms owe on their foreign earnings. This includes performing searches of online financial statements, extracting info from sources, and organizing/classifying the information in an Excel file.

Job Requirements

Job Requirements - Students must: 

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Have completed or be enrolled in ACCT/BADM 3201

Preferred qualifications: 

  • An interest or internship experience in the field of tax
  • Have completed or be enrolled in ACCT/BADM 3260
