Work-Study Research Assistant Program

General Research Focus: This position involves work with an archive, historical documents and images (digital and hard copy) and stories. It is well suited for students in the humanities, particularly English and History. They will develop career skills in editing, organizing information, and verbal/visual storytelling. 

Brief Position Description: The student will work with the professor in person on campus in organizing and documenting historical documents and images. The student may also be able to work partially remotely in reading and researching information related to the project. Evaluating scholarly sources and editing notes and written documents will combine with aspects of storytelling. The student should be based in Stamford for in-person work. Students with digital proficiency will contribute to a multimedia aspect of this project’s development. 

English, History, and DMD majors will sharpen their research and writing skills. They will learn how to organize information (verbal and visual) from other times and places. Students whose career goals involve content development, publishing, and writing will benefit from this experience.

Job Description: A "Student Research Review Assistant - 205" will assist faculty in research efforts by conducting review of literature and subject material specific to research topics. As part of a related scholarly project where the professor is guest editing a special issue of an academic journal, students will participate in the following:

  • Fact-checking correct citations and historical information
  • Proofreading text and copy 
  • Digitizing images
  • Providing technical support for multimedia aspects of the project

 

Job Requirements

Job Requirements - A student must: 

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Be based at the Stamford Campus for the primary in-person work.
  • Priority will be given to English, History, and DMD majors and minors.
  • Schedule will be negotiable to coincide with the professor's and student's availability.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Technical aptitude with digital media and design is valuable.
  • Experience with archival research or interest in libraries and archives. 
  • Coursework in History and English/Writing is ideal.
