Work-Study Research Assistant Program

Faculty Name: Tiffany Kelley

Faculty School/Department: School of Nursing

General Research Focus: Dr. Kelley is the first professor of her kind to lead innovation integration into nursing core curriculum. She has spent 20 of her current 24 nursing years aiming for higher quality care through healthcare technologies. Dr. Kelley’s relentless vision for breaking the status quo in nursing led to her pursuit of a professional, academic, and entrepreneurial trajectory in nursing informatics and innovation, both specialty nursing fields, that integrate multiple sciences to guide the practice.

Brief Position Description: This position will be to support Dr. Kelley with conducting literature searches and formulating research papers for submission. The student in this position will be motivated and eager to learn the skills and steps involved in developing new knowledge for publication in journals and books. The student in this position will work with Dr. Kelley to identify key articles, organize data, formulate tables, reference lists, journal manuscript templates and more.

The student will develop content knowledge and skill acquisition in the areas of:
1) Content Knowledge - Informatics and Innovation in Nursing and Healthcare
2) Skill Acquisition - literature searches of nursing and healthcare databases, manuscript development, reference list formatting, table creation, journal requirements for publication, and more.

Job Description - A "Student Research Review Assistant - 205" will assist faculty in research effort by conducting review of literature and subject material specific to research topics. A student in this position may:

  1. Search relevant scholarly databases for current and existing literature (e.g., PubMed, CINAHL)
  2. Compile a list of possible references from index or abstract sources
  3. Look up, check and format references
  4. Extract information from sources
  5. Identify journal requirements
  6. Organize and classify data
  7. Proofread and edit reports & research copy
  8. Perform miscellaneous duties as directed
Job Requirements

Job requirements - A student must:

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Commit to a regular schedule of hours each week around courses (M-F)
  • Be responsive to email inquiries and tasks in a timely manner
  • Demonstrate a willing interest to learn new skills
  • Ability to take direction after instruction and apply to the requested task.
  • Meet weekly with Dr. Kelley to discuss objectives for the week and progress (as part of the schedule).

Preferred qualifications:    

  • Interest in nursing and healthcare innovation and/or technology and informatics
  • Experience in Microsoft word and Microsoft office suite
  • Well organized in managing files and emails
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines.
