Work-Study Research Assistant Program

General Research Focus:  I am specialized in social and economic history between in the 16th and 19th centuries. I am currently researching the history of capitalism in Asia (particularly India and Iran) with a special focus on the Parsi and Zoroastrian communities between the 16th and 20th centuries. The position can be in-person, partially in-person, or fully remote.

Brief Position Description: Students are expected to create bibliographies and search for primary sources in newspaper archives and other available datasets. In the course of time, they will also have the opportunity to read the relevant literature and/or primary sources, extract excerpts and write an independent proposal and/or paper. 

Students will be mentored and guided through the necessary training to accomplish the research work. They will receive continuous feedback. Moreover, if they so wish, they will also have the opportunities for additional responsibility, including the development of a more independent project with the prospect of publishing and presenting their research.

A "Student Research Review Assistant - 205" will assist faculty in research effort by conducting review of literature and subject material specific to research topics. Activities include researching primary sources, compiling a list of possible references from index or abstract sources, looking up and checking references, extracting information from sources, translating or transcribing, organizing and classifying data, tabulating and analyzing data, proofreading and editing reports & research copy, and preparing bibliographies and indexes.

Job Requirements

Job Requirements - A student must: 

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps

  • Interest in the topic and prior experience is welcome but not necessary.
