Work-Study Research Assistant Program

General Research Focus: We are studying how fish ecological niches change when they are re-introduced to a habitat. This entails grinding and weighing and packing muscle tissue for Carbon and Nitrogen stable isotope analysis to infer diet, in fish sampled from 16 lakes in Alaska.

Brief Position Description: The WSRAP researchers will prepare fish muscle tissues (pre-dried) by grinding and weighing and packing them to ship to a laboratory in Switzerland for stable isotope analysis. The students will be responsible for careful sample preparation, and data management tracking information on the samples. When data collection is completed there is an opportunity to be involved in data analysis after.

 

Students will learn the basics of stable isotope analysis for ecological inferences of diet, and good data management practices.

A "Student Laboratory & Field Analysis Assistant - 203" will assist faculty in research efforts within a laboratory or other research-specific environment. A student in this position will   Students will grind, weigh, and pack samples and record information on each sample in a database, then send samples to a remote lab for mass spectroscopy.

 

Job Requirements

Job Qualifications - A student must:

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate computer, phone, and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • No prior laboratory experience required

Preferred qualifications: 

  • A interest in ecology and evolution is strongly preferred.
