Work-Study Research Assistant Program

General Research Focus: The general focus of the research is around advancing the health and well-being of the Latine community in the Hartford and greater Hartford area. Currently, we are conducting listening sessions with Latine community members around policy issues, collecting oral histories of particular ethnic groups, and interviewing bilingual social workers to understand workforce development. We are also writing a grant to better understand Latine immigrant health.

Brief Position Description: The research assist would be conducting interviews, focus groups, helping to develop and collect survey data, writing literature reviews for grants and publications, analyzing data, participating in team meetings and 1 or 2 trainings around research methods/data analysis. The student would also be helping to recruit study participants and write conference abstracts (and present them if desired) and manuscripts for publication.

Students will learn how to collect different kinds of data (qualitative and quantitative), facilitate focus groups, interview participants, and be a part of community based participatory research projects. Students will learn how to code and analyze data and the basics of writing for conference presentations and publication. They will also learn how to collaborate with community organizations and community members.

A "Student Interview & Survey Research Assistant - 202" will assist faculty in research efforts using survey research techniques. A student in this position may:

  • Interview participants
  • collect survey data
  • write literature review
  • write conference abstracts
  • analyze collected data
  • prepare manuscripts for publication
  • be involved in grant writing

 

Job Requirements

Job Requirements - A student must

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate computer, phone, and/or other research equipment
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Student will be able to work remotely and will also be needed to attend different focus groups in different locations as needed.
  • The student will also be asked to participate in team meetings that will most likely be virtual.
  • The student should be familiar with collecting literature sources and able to communicate in both Spanish and English (would be preferred but not required).
  • Have a sense of understanding and respect for different cultures.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Be able to speak Spanish (read and write) all preferred but not required
  • Interest in Latine communities and social justice
