Work-Study Research Assistant Program

Faculty Name: Barbara Gurr

Faculty Department: Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

General Research Focus: Independent publishing (self-publishing) and social media (booktok, instagram, X, etc.).

Brief Position Description: Research popular social media and other communications to determine race, gender, sexuality, among independent authors and their readers as well as other creators (ie, reviewers). Develop social media campaigns for a volunteer indie author and measure their efficacy.

Students will be able to critically analyze the "indie author world" for race, gender, and sexuality, including the wider indie author ecosystem. Students will learn or further master various forms of social media as well as learn how to develop social media campaigns across multiple platforms, including social media messaging and marketing, message cohesion, and brand development. Students will develop their own social media campaign for a volunteer indie author.

A "Student Human Behavioral Research Assistant - 204" will assist faculty in human research efforts. A student in this position may:

  • Identify (with help) important components of the indie author ecosystem 
  • Identify (with help) important social media outlets for indie fiction authors
  • Complete content analysis of these outlets for: race, gender, sexuality of author and, where possible, book(s)
  • Complete content analysis of targeted social media outlets for effective and ineffective marketing strategies based on targeted measures
  • Develop at least one social media campaign for volunteer indie author

 

Job Requirements

Job Requirements - A student must: 

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • The majority of this work can be completed virtually and on your own time. Student researcher will be expected to meet with me at least twice a month to discuss findings and plans (Fridays at noon, occasional zoom meetings).
  • Student may also be in communication with volunteer indie author to develop and measure campaign. Expected workload is 4-6 hours a week during fall semester; spring semester negotiable if study continues.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Student should love reading fantasy! (they will be reading volunteer author's work as well as possibly others, and should be at least somewhat familiar with fantasy as a genre).
  • Student should be an excellent (or at least very good!) writer, although this is negotiable (I can work with student on writing skills). Student should be at least familiar with, if not active on, various social media platforms, including but not limited to tiktok, instagram, and facebook. 

   These skills/knowledge sets would be great but aren't necessary:

  •    Familiarity with excel
  •    Familiarity with image production programs (Canva, photoshop, etc.)

This is an ideal position for an English, Marketing, or Communications major or minor.
