Work-Study Research Assistant Program

Faculty Name: Jennifer Dineen

Faculty Department: School of Public Policy 

General Research Focus:

Our team uses a variety of methods to study the effectiveness of policies and interventions that aim to reduce firearm injury. Student Research Assistants will also be working to support Drs. Dineen and Raissian's work building a research clearing house for UConn's ARMS Center for Gun Injury Prevention (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://arms.chip.uconn.edu/&ved=2ahUKEwj4qMH2_tGHAxVID1kFHXtDO5UQFnoECAYQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1eiYMPObPkjvnYlMggaTyk) 

Brief Position Description:

The student research assistant may be expected to:

  •    Conduct literature reviews
  •    Catalogue relevant sources
  •    Edit webpage
  •    Proof read and edit research briefs
  •    Create bibliographies
  •    Attend weekly staff meetings

Students will develop skills related to critical review of the literature, professional oral and written communications, along with knowledge of current U.S. firearm policy conversations. 

Job Description:

A Student Research Review Assistant - 205 will assist faculty in research effort by conducting review of literature and subject material specific to research topics. A student in this position may:

  • Review new literature from a variety of disciplines, along with various types of media to identify evidence-based research products to add to the ARMS Clearing house.
  • Add newly identified research to Clearinghouse database  
  • Craft and edit written communications announcing speakers and webinars to be shared with ARMS affiliates and ARMS mailing lists.
  • Proof read research papers and policy briefs.

 

 

 

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

A student must: 

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Have knowledge of Excel and Microsoft Word
