Work Study Research Assistant Program

General Research Focus:

Our research focuses on functional organic and inorganic materials based on the unique assembly of multiple components. The design and control of these structures are the keys to the high performance of these materials. Specific research areas include nanostructured materials for functional, structural, and environmental applications, as well as functional inorganic solids for luminescent, optoelectronic, electrochemical, and mechanical applications. Research areas also include the processing methods for fabrication of these materials, including additive manufacturing, roll-to-roll coating, etc. 

Brief Position Description:

Students will assist in a variety of in-lab and data processing tasks, including hands-on fabrication of functional materials, material characterization, and literature review. Given the variety of projects, students will be able to assist in projects that best align with their research interests within our field. Students will gain valuable, hands-on knowledge of the research process, including experimentation, instrument use, and scientific writing.

Job Description:

A Student Laboratory & Field Analysis Assistant - 203 will assist faculty in research efforts within a laboratory or other research-specific environment. A student in this position may:

  • Prepare samples, keeping detailed records 
  • Prepare and maintain research materials and their environment 
  • Operate and maintain standard lab equipment 
  • Make identifications and take measurements 
  • Analyze, classify, and communicate data

 

 

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

A student must: 
Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
Be able to maintain confidentiality
Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students with a basic knowledge/background/interest in chemistry, polymers, material science, or related engineering fields 
  • Willingness to learn, help others, and be a productive team member!
