Work-Study Research Assistant Program

Faculty Department: Anthropology; Social and Critical Inquiry (Native American and Indigenous Studies)

General Research Focus:

Dr. Acebo is an Anthropologist-Archaeologist, and Indigenous studies researcher and runs the UConn Anthropology Department’s Community-Based Digital Heritage Lab (CDHL). His research uses archaeology, material science applications, and ethnographic interviews to aid partnered Tribal Nations and descendant communities in California and Hawaii. This includes archival and artifact analysis, 3D scanning and printing applications, geochemical analysis, and digital mapping applications (GIS). 

Brief Position Description:

As Laboratory and Field Analysis Assistant, the student will be expected to help prepare and maintain research materials and environment, code/ plot and analyze data, file and classify data, and assist with literature review/publication preparation. These activities are specifically related to 2024 field data from the “Enduring Indigenous Homelands Project,” a community-based archaeology project that assists the Pechanga Band of Indians with mapping cultural areas and developing ecological-cultural protection protocols for undeveloped land. The assistant will help curate and analyze samples and survey data, as well as prepare and maintain laboratory equipment related to this project. 

Students will be able to learn archive management skills, 3D scanning and printing applications, sample preparation for archaeological analysis, and develop GIS map-making skills. Since the project involves collaboration with Indigenous nations and descendants of communities, the assistant will also gain exposure to project development with underrepresented communities in the academy.

Job Description:

A Student Laboratory & Field Analysis Assistant - 203 will assist faculty in research efforts within a laboratory or other research-specific environment. A student in this position may:

   • Prepare and maintain research materials and environment
   • Operate and maintain standard lab equipment
   • Test equipment and resolve basic problems within guidelines
   • Make identifications and take measurements
   • Code/ plot and analyze data within guidelines
   • Keep detailed records
   • File and classify data
   • Organize, analyze, and communicate data
   • Attend training sessions and staff meetings
   • Scan reference materials/documents needed for reports and publications
   • Perform miscellaneous duties as directed

 

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

A student must: 

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Possess some experience with file management.
  • Have some familiarity with Windows, and the Microsoft Office suite applications.
  • Possess introductory experience in notetaking and file scanning.
  • Must be available for lab meeting on Tuesdays at 9 am (maybe adjusted).
  • Must be available for lab work hours on Tuesdays (9 am-11 am), Wednesdays (9 am-1 pm), and Thursdays (9 am-11 am).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of any anthropology coursework or related fields (e.g., history, political science, sociology, psychology, Indigenous Studies [NAIS], American studies, environmental science, Women and Gender Studies).
  • Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS Pro
  • Familiarity with Maker Bot 3D Printers
  • Familiarity with curation methods and archiving techniques. 
  • Interests in Indigenous culture, archaeology, and history.
