Work-Study Research Assistant Program

General Research Focus:

This position will support the production of two short nonfiction films. One project focuses specifically on the history of the marketing materials used by the Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or D.A.R.E. program. The other revolves around the inception of Paradise Park, a Black-American resort created in 1949 as a response to segregation.

Brief Position Description:

Both films primarily use archival materials. I’m seeking a student who is well-versed in reporting and interviewing sources and interested in learning to work with archival footage, photos, audio, etc. 
   
   The primary duties of this position, partially in-person, are:
   -Research topic background 
   -Pre-interview sources
   -Correspond with archivists and collectors 
   -Collect and share notes about the materials

The student will build/practice reporting, research, filmmaking, and professional communication skills. 

Job Description:

A Student Research Review Assistant - 205 will assist faculty in research effort by conducting review of literature and subject material specific to research topics. A student in this position may:

   -Research topic background 
   -Pre-interview sources
   -Correspond with archivists and collectors 
   -Collect and share notes about the materials

A student must: 

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Be able to operate a computer, telephone, and communication devices
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to meet virtually and in person
  • Be able to organize information clearly
  • Be able to write and communicate clearly
  • Be able to use Excel or other spreadsheet software

Preferred Qualifications:

  •  Have experience with archival research, filmmaking, and/or journalism
  •  Have an interest in history, archival research, and/or storytelling
