Work-Study Research Assistant Program

General Research Focus: Our research focuses on the development and application of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to create educational resources and foster community engagement in the GenAI area. We utilize methods such as prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, and agentic workflows to design and evaluate AI-driven educational tools and community platforms.

Brief Position Description: Students in this position will be responsible for conducting comprehensive literature reviews on the latest advancements in generative AI and LLMs, specifically in the context of educational resource development and community engagement. They will analyze and summarize research findings, identify key trends, and help draft proposals for NSF funding. Additionally, students will collaborate with the research team to design and evaluate AI-driven educational tools and community platforms.

Through this research assistant opportunity, students will gain hands-on experience in conducting literature reviews and synthesizing research findings in the field of generative AI and LLMs. They will learn about cutting-edge AI methodologies such as prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, and agentic workflows. Students will also develop skills in proposal writing, critical analysis, and collaborative research, preparing them for advanced studies or careers in AI research and development.

A "Student Research Review Assistant - 205" will assist faculty in research effort by conducting review of literature and subject material specific to research topics. A student in this position may:

  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews on generative AI and large language models (LLMs).
  • Compile and maintain a list of relevant references from academic journals, conference proceedings, and other sources.
  • Extract and summarize key information from research articles.
  • Organize and classify data related to generative AI and LLM research.
  • Tabulate and analyze data to identify trends and insights.
  • Proofread and edit research reports and proposals.
  • Prepare bibliographies and indexes for research publications

 

Job Requirements

Job qualifications - A student must: 

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Must be available for weekly lab meetings on Thursdays at 3pm.
  • Have excellent research and analytical skills.
  • Have proficiency in using academic databases and reference management software (e.g., Zotero, EndNote).
  • Have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Be detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Strong background in AI, machine learning, or related fields.
