Work-Study Research Assistant Program

General Research Focus:

The student will join the Greenhouse Research and Extension Team, which focuses on projects related to water quality and quantity in greenhouse-grown crops. The student will assist graduate and post-doctoral fellows with research projects conducted in the laboratory and greenhouses. Responsibilities for this position include maintaining and sampling plants in various settings (greenhouse or growth chambers), preparing materials for experiments and harvests (e.g., setting up irrigation systems, organizing trays, preparing paper bags, centrifuge tubes, and test tubes), and preparing materials for isolating or reproducing microorganisms such as phytopathogenic fungi (e.g., preparing media, autoclaving media and tools, and setting up Petri dishes). Additionally, the student will sample, collect, and enter data and perform miscellaneous duties as directed.

The student will be able to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment, developing research skills such as critical and analytical thinking, organizing, analyzing, and communicating data, presenting information in written and oral form, and collecting information and sampling from various sources.

Job Description:

A Student Laboratory & Field Analysis Assistant - 203 will assist faculty in research efforts within a laboratory or other research-specific environment. A student in this position may:

   • Test equipment and resolve basic problems within guidelines

   • Organize, analyze, and communicate data
   • Perform miscellaneous duties as directed

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

A student must: 

  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Have intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office tools
  • Have knowledge of specific applications related to data acquisition.
  • Have the ability to complete tasks with minimum supervision
  • Have excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

Preferred Qualifications:

Have proven interest in plant production, plant phytopathology, or microbiology.
