Work-Study Research Assistant Program

Faculty Name: Sandy Grande

Faculty Department: Social and Critical Inquiry & Political Science

General Research Focus: This aspect of my research is related to developing a relevant educational program for Native American students and their communities in Connecticut. The research will have real-world application as there will be implementation of the work across the next couple of years.

Brief Position Description: Students will assist with analysis of survey data collected from Tribal Communities in Connecticut (Mashantucket Pequot, Mohegan, Golden Hill Paugussett, Schagticoke, and Eastern Pequot). They will also assist with setting up follow up interviews and conducting focus groups. Students will also do some research on national educational trends among Native American students. Students will learn basic data analysis and interview skills. They will also learn about the protocols of working with Tribal Nations. 

A "Student Interview & Survey Research Assistant - 202" will assist faculty in research efforts utilizing survey research techniques. A student in this position may:

  • Schedule interviews 
  • Email surveys
  • Collect and record data 
  • Code/plot and analyze data 
  • Review forms and/or notes for completeness 
  • Transcribe from digital recorders and videotapes 
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as directed 

 

 

Job Requirements
Job requirements - A student must: 
  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Students must be available on Monday mornings/early afternoon and Wednesdays or Friday's 
Preferred qualifications: 
  • Completed coursework in Native American and Indigenous Studies
