Sustainability & Environmental Justice Intern - Regional Campuses

Position Overview: Interns will be paid an hourly rate and work 8-12 hours per week with the UConn Office of Sustainability (OS) remotely from UConn regional campuses.  Occasional evening and weekend events may be required. Attendance at monthly intern staff meetings is also expected.

 

One position will be filled at each campus.***

This role will focus on advancing environmental justice (EJ) and sustainability initiatives at UConn's regional campuses. Interns will be responsible for leading projects including service learning, EJ education and outreach, compiling greenhouse gas inventories and energy audits to align with campus decarbonization goals, and engagement with the student body around sustainability through communications and event coordination. Interns will support the Sustainability Coordinator for Regional Campuses and Environmental Justice who will provide leadership and direction on their projects.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In coordination with the Sustainability Coordinator for Regional Campuses and Environmental Justice, lead and collaborate on projects to advance EJ efforts on campus and in the local community. This could include educational projects including speaker series, panels or action-based community impact projects. 
  • Support the Sustainability Coordinator for Regional Campuses and Environmental Justice in completing home energy audits to promote energy efficiency in student housing or other qualifying residences. 
  • Assist the Sustainability Coordinator for Regional Campuses and Environmental Justice in advancing decarbonization goals for the regional campuses, including contributing to the greenhouse gas inventory and educating students on methods for reducing their carbon footprints. 
  • Support outreach and engagement efforts on regional campuses, including flyering, canvassing, and tabling at events to raise awareness of sustainability initiatives and encourage student involvement.
  • Research, analyze, and summarize best practices in environmental justice and sustainability from peer institutions, using this information to inform and improve programs at UConn
  • Coordinate and attend meetings with relevant student organizations and faculty members to promote awareness and facilitate collaboration. 
  • Contribute to online publications, including the OS newsletter, social media, and the webpage to communicate progress on regional campus sustainability and EJ efforts.
Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a current UConn student attending a regional campus
  • A minimum GPA of 3.2
  • An interest in the environment, sustainability, and their interactions with society
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Ability to work independently
  • Positive attitude, reliability, adaptability, enthusiasm, professionalism, and patience
