Work-Study Research Assistant Program

General Research Focus: This position is devoted to providing students exposure to high-level research, advocacy and education initiatives related to the mission of the Korey Stringer Institute (KSI). The mission of the Korey Stringer Institute is to provide research, education, advocacy and consultation to maximize performance, optimize safety and prevent sudden death for the athlete, warfighter and laborer. Individuals will be provided full immersion into the daily operations of an active research lab; assisting with field studies, epidemiological investigations and laboratory protocols focused on preventing sudden death in sport and enhancing sport safety.

Students will learn how to conduct human research as it relates to performance and thermoregulation in the heat. Additionally, students will learn to collect, analyze and maintain a dataset for the most common variables collected in our lab related to body temperature, physical performance, fitness assessments, hydration assessments (via blood and/or urine) as well as metrics related to sweat composition. 

A "Student Laboratory & Field Analysis Assistant - 203" will assist faculty in research efforts within a laboratory or other research-specific environment. A student in this position may:

  • Attend training sessions (CITI, bloodborne pathogens training, CPR/AED etc.) and staff meetings
  • Assist in preparing IRB materials
  • Collecting biological samples (e.g. urine, sweat, saliva, blood)
  • Prepare and maintain research materials and environment
  • Operate and maintain standard lab equipment
  • Test equipment and resolve basic problems within guidelines
  • Take accurate measurements and interact with human subjects
  • Code/plot and analyze data within guidelines
  • Keep detailed records
  • File and classify data
  • Organize, analyze, and communicate data
  • Read and summarize related literature
  • Assist in manuscript development and writing
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as directed
Job Requirements
Job Requirements - A student must: 
  • Be an undergraduate student with a federal work-study award
  • Be able to operate a computer and/or other research equipment
  • Have strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Complete required research reflections and a professional development experience
  • Meet with an OUR staff member for one advising appointment each semester to discuss learning, goals, and next steps
  • Be able to collect data in a hot environment (~100F-105F with 40% relative humidity)
  • Be available for times during normally business hours (i.e., 7am-6pm), there may be opportunities for weekend hours if the student prefers those days.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Skilled with use in excel, SPSS, or data management
  • Prior lab/research experience
  • Science/health background or focus
